Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1727-1800) commanded the Russian army expedition to Italy (1799-1800) to fight Napoleon. He won the battles of Cassano d'Adda, Trebbia and Novi. After the defeat of General Korsak against Andre Massena at Zurich, he crossed the Alps in the winter of 1799. Palatial intrigues prevented him from being received by the Czar. He lived in his palace in St. Petersburg until his death. He is buried in this town in the Church of the Annunciation in the Monastery of Alexander Nevski. His home was turned into a museum with his name. On 21 September 2009, Dmitry Medvedev, president of the Russian Federation, inaugurated a monument in Switzerland to commemorate the event.
