To all the Couches I've known before...

This is dedicated to all the couches I've known before. I have favorites, but I can't bring myself to speak of only one.

There is the first couch in my memory. I remember naps there with my Mom, sitting reading to my dog Grizz and the soft throw blanket that was always there. It was a tweed couch I think.

Of course Grandma's couch. Mostly sat on to watch cartoons but in the Summer she and I would sit and snap fresh green beans on the brown velvetly, probably very ugly now days couch. Grandma's are great.

Then there's Aunt Judy's couch. Everyone has an Aunt Judy don't they? I don't remember the color, or feel - I just remember almost falling asleep on that couch and being scared wide awake by the Invasion of the Body Snatchers movie - like it was yesterday. She turned it off and sat and talked with me.

The sea foam green leather couch we sat on coming off a twelve hour international flight. Meeting my Mother in Law for the first time, being tired and dehydrated and in need of a shower. Uncomfotable like the leather. Don't buy leather couches.

I'm running out of time and a happy favorite must be mentioned. It was my first couch I picked out because I loved it. It was vintage ,the perfect shade of turquoise. That material from probably the 50's made of tiny loops and the patterns in the fabric were where there were no loops - sometimes silver tensilly threads ran through the fabric - but not mine. It was perfect and I liked to imagine the history of the couch and the woman who bought it new. On that couch I had the perfect spot to lie, sun streaming in from the window behind it curtains not matching but at the same time went perfectly. I could watch the birds and feel high on life. Thriving tropical plants at each end. I'm seeing myself alone with my thoughts, peaceful, warm. Friends might come over later. A cookout maybe.

Three minutes is up but one last bit - in honor of my aesthetically favorite green velvet couch that ripped and I tossed out. It's only been a couple months and my living room just isn't the same. I miss you green couch!

* This was fun - a writing excersise I learned about from Stephanie @ Adventures in Babywearing. The purpose is to get your juices flowing and it did. I started with a list of ten couches and just started writing about them as they popped into my mind. With an egg timer to guide me, I wished I had more time when the buzzer went off. Didn't edit - not even spell check!
