Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)

Nasceu em Florença de família ligada politicamente aos 'Guelfos brancos', partido ligado ao Imperador e contra o Papa. Aos 18 anos conheceu Beatrice Portinari, 10 anos mais nova que ele. Sentiu profundamente a sua morte em 1290. Combateu na batalha de Campaldino (11.08.1289) contra Arezzo. Foi médico e farmacêutico. Guido Novello da Polenta, príncipe de Ravenna, convidou-o (1318) para viver nesta cidade onde terminou o 'Paraíso' e onde foi sepultado. Consideraram-no 'il sommo poeta'.


He was born in Florence within a family politically connected to the 'white Guelphs', a party that was pro Emperor and against the Pope. At 18 he met Beatrice Portinari, 10 years younger than him. He was deeply affected by her death in 1290. He fought in the Battle of Campaldino (11th, August 1289) against Arezzo. He was a doctor and pharmacist. Guido Novello da Polenta, prince of Ravenna, invited him (1318) to live in this city, the place where he finished 'Paradise' and where he was buried. He is considered ‘il sommo poet'.
