The aristocrat Emilia Plater (1806-1831), born in Vilnius, appreciated the efforts of the Belarusian Kosciuzko Tadeusz (1746-1817), who had returned from the American war of Independence, and of the Lithuanian poet Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) to ensure the independence of the Polish-Lithuanian community. She admired Laskarina Bouboulina (1771-1825) a participant in the liberation struggle of Greece against the Turks. With a small group of volunteers she fought the Russians and died of serious illness on December 23, 1831.
