Safo de Lesbos ou de Mitilene (Sappho of Mitilene)

No séc. VII aC criou Safo em Mitilene (ilha de Lesbos) uma escola para ensinar poesia, música e dança a jovens do sexo feminino. Mantinha relação de amizade com o poeta Alceu. Suidas chamou-lhe 'cortesã'. Está na origem do conceito de ‘lésbica’. Vários autores, como Horácio em Odes, mencionam a sua paixão pelo marinheiro Faonte. O ditador Pítaco exilou-a para a ilha de Leucas. Suicidou-se lançando-se de uma rocha ao mar.

In the 7th century BC, Sappho of Mytilene (Lesbos Island) created a school to teach poetry, music and dance to young girls. She maintained a friendly relationship with the poet Alcaeus. Suidas called her a 'courtesan'. The term ‘lesbian’ derives from her name. Several authors, such as Horace in Odes, mention her passion for Phaon, a sailor. The dictator Pitaco exiled Sappho to the island of Leucas. She committed suicide by throwing herself from a cliff into the sea.
