In the Roman epoch the site was originally occupied by fishermen (incola lacunae). In the 12th century it became one of the most important European cities. Its huge commercial fleet carried goods brought from the Levant from factories located in Crete, Rhodes and other areas. St. Mark the Evangelist is its patron saint. It was the birthplace of popes like Gregory XII, painters like Tintoretto and composers like Fr. Antonio Vivaldi.
