The Greeks founded Neapolis in the gulf of the Tyrrhenian Sea near the islands of Ischia and Capri. It suffered several conquests: from the Romans (4th century BC) to the Italian unification (1861). The Greeks dug subterranean galleries that today contain thousands of cisterns. The University was created in 1224. The Archaeological Museum (Bourbon) received the first pieces after the excavations of Pompeii. It was razed by the German bombardments of 1944.
